Sport At Town Close
Sport plays a major part of school life at Town Close. Not only is it a subject in which children gain confidence, develop all aspects of physical fitness and learn a range of skills and techniques in a wide variety of sporting activities but it is also a medium through which many life skills are ingrained. These include team work, health and safety, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, respect for others, communication and fair play. They also learn about their own character and personality through early exposure to competitive situations.
All pupils at Town Close are given the opportunity to take part in traditional team games. For boys these are rugby, hockey and cricket. For girls these are hockey, netball and rounders. The School has a comprehensive fixture list for teams all the way through the Prep School. We compete further afield in regional and national competitions. We promote equal opportunity in sport and differentiation is an integral element of the games programme. By fielding numerous teams at each age group, not only are we able to ensure that there is healthy competition for places but also that the majority of pupils will, at some point during their life at Town Close, be able to play a competitive match at a level matched to their ability.
In contrast to team games, individual sporting pursuits including swimming, athletics, gymnastics and dance are taken very seriously at Town Close. Events such as the House Swimming Gala, the House Gymnastics Competition and Sports Day are important occasions during which children get to compete against their peers. Town Close is always well represented in some of these activities at county, regional and, occasionally, national meetings where the most able pupils are challenged by competing against other schools.
