Felsted U9 Girls Mini Hockey Tornament

On Thursday 5th March the U9 girls hockey team attended Felsted School’s Mini Hockey Tournament.

Following a hearty roast dinner on arrival, the girls went on to beat the hosts 1 – 0 through a goal by Abby Gooderham. With their spirits high they went on to beat Orwell Park 2 – 0 ( Abby 2) and Kingshott 3 – 1 (Abby 2, Victoria Findlay 1). With the title in their sights they faced Barnadiston – who had also won all their games coming into this decisive match. Defensively they battled hard with some crunching tackles by Anna Tighe and Alice Beckett, and a goal scoring save by Goalkeeper Jorgyella Thorpe. Eventually they went 1 up with a perfectly timed sweep into goal from Jemima Fennell . A text book style short corner finished by an unstoppable strike from the top of the circle by Abby, made them worthy champions. The second year in a row for our U9 girls.

Congratulations to the whole squad for a fantastic combined effort and tremendous team spirit.

National Prep Schools Mini Hockey Finals

After qualifying unbeaten in the regional mini hockey tournament, the Under 13 girls travelled to Queenswood School for the National Prep Schools’ Finals.

In their first group match they came up against Bromsgrove School, the Northern Champions and secured a 1-0 win, the goal being scored by Olivia Ripman. In their second match, against Millfield School, the girls did not really get going and lost 0-2. This meant that they had to beat Bishop Stortford in their final group match to qualify for the semi finals. In a close match, Town Close raised their game and scored the only goal half way through the second half, courtesy of an excellent short corner routine, finished off by Paris Wood.

In the semi final Town Close played Felsted School, the current national champions. This proved to be a titanic struggle, with both teams attacking from the start. Felsted took the lead in the first half, but Town Close refused to give in and were rewarded with an equaliser in the second half. Paris was again the scorer, finishing off a fine move between captain Hannah Gormley and Olivia Ripman. The match finished all square and went to sudden death extra time. Both teams had chances to score and Town Close had one of their shots saved on the line. With only a minute to go, Felsted broke away and scored the decisive goal, beating goalkeeper, Rose Buchan, who had performed heroics to keep the Felsted attack at bay.

A 3rd/4th play off match against Millfield followed and Town Close narrowly lost 0-1. The girls should be very proud of their efforts throughout the day and they came so close to winning the national title.

Squad: Rose Buchan; Kathryn Twentyman; Hannah Gormley; Georgia Heaton; Phoebe Welsh; Polly Curtin; Jessica Deeley; Olivia Ripman; Paris Wood.
