Year 5 ASC Camping Trip

The Year 5 children who take part in A.S.C. have just had their annual camping trip.  The children were driven to Whitlingham Broad from where they walk in small groups to our camp site in Surlingham, a journey of about seven kilometres.  Once at the camp the children put their tents up and have a barbeque.  In the morning they have a chance to explore the Surlingham nature reserve before packing up their tents and going home.

Here’s what some of the children thought of their trip:

I liked the walk on Friday evening to get to the camp site.  My group had Mr Buck and Mr Hewitt to walk with.  We went past Mrs Pointer's house and we met her dog who tried to play with me.   I was having a nice chat with Mr Hewitt while walking all the way there.  We went past a poo factory it smelt a bit funny.  Maxwell

On Friday evening we put up the tents. Putting up the tents was alright, obviously the rain didn’t help but still you can only blame the clouds for that. I was with Mila and together we managed to fight through the rain and put up our fantastic tent.  First we got the poles and threaded them through the fly sheet, then we did the really hard part which was putting the stoppers in the end of the poles. After that we hooked up the inside and used the mallet to knock the pegs into the ground so the tent wouldn't fly about.  Martha

The barbeque was brilliant. It was done by a cook. We each had a hot dog and a burger. Then someone took off the rack and we roasted marshmallows on the fire. It was incredibly funny when my marshmallow fell in the fire and I took ten minutes to get it out with a stick by which time it had melted into goop.  George

On Friday night the whole group had a barbeque, Mr. Wells and Mr. Mitchell did it.  First we had a hot dog in a bun with ketchup and about half an hour later we had a burger in a bun with ketchup. They were nice.  Later on around 8.00pm we had marshmallows, we got some long thin sticks and put the marshmallows on them we put them in the barbeque because it was still hot.  Some got burnt!  Joshua

I liked roasting marshmallows. It was funny when John and Anna's marshmallows fell in the fire and started bubbling up and then turned into a black pile of cindering ash!  George and I stood by the barbecue the whole time because it was lovely and hot but when the fire went out were shouted noooooooo! For tea we had sausages, yum.  Sameer

I liked roasting marshmallows on the barbecue because they were tasty.  It was fun watching them get roasted on the stick.  It was funny seeing other peoples marshmallows drop on the fire and melt, but it was disappointing when mine fell on the fire.  Henry

The nature walk was extremely interesting. We found lots of different things.  One group even found a dead mouse, it was slimy and disgusting. Ben picked the slithery mouse up.  The team with the dead mouse didn't even win, team 1 won, they got an extra Kit Kat.  Annabelle

The part of the camping trip I enjoyed the most was the nature trail because you were in a group and you all worked together looking for different wildlife.  It was quite hard to look for animals which don't tend to come out in wet weather but that made it all the more fun as we had to look longer and harder for the animals.  We also looked at the plants, we found this really cool grass which was called magic grass where you could pull it apart and put it back together.  Our group found a variety of snails and we found this microscopic snail which we called Sausage, we also had a ladybird which was very hard to find but it was worth it because we won the prize mainly because our group had the most variety of wildlife and plants.  I really enjoyed it and I would love to go again.  Swetha

I really enjoyed the camping trip, but my favourite part was the nature trail.  We went on Saturday morning. We got into 4 groups of 8-9 people. We set off east from the campsite into the woods. We were given some things to find in there. Our group found lots of different kinds of leaves and flowers, but after we found 6 slugs and 5 snails in a row we started only looking for them.  After a while we sat down and had a rest only to find that another group were only collecting slugs as well, so we decided to have a competition. I was at the back collecting all of the slugs and snails they had missed.  At the end our group finished with over 40 slugs and 20 snails. We decided not to do the competition at the end so we don't know who won (it was probably us).  Thomas

The nature trail started at about 10:00am.  The members of staff were : Mr Parker and Mr Smith it was fun because we were walking around a broad and were meant to find plants, flowers and a slug and a snail but my group found over 50 slugs over 20 snails, a dead mouse and a dead wasp!  George

The nature trail was my favourite activity on the camping trip. I loved it because it was fascinating to see how much wildlife there was.   We had nine people in our group and I was very happy with mine.  One other group found a dead mouse, so they thought they would win.  Our group found loads of slugs, plants leaves and insects.  Everybody was fussing over who picked up the slugs, as none of us had gloves on.  It was really, really fun and our group won in the end!  Marina
