Y5 Sikh Day - 2008

Roop Singh and Surinder Kaur recently returned to Town Close to take part in our annual Sikh Day.  This is now the fifth time this event has been held in School.  This is what the children thought about their day

The best thing about Sikh day was dressing up in the Sikh outfits that Surinder brought in.  Surinder is Roop's wife. I was wearing a red dress and an orange turban; I took the turban off and put a veil on my head.  I enjoyed wearing the traditional wedding dress. Rosa Engall

I liked it when we made some of the artefacts, which Roop bought in, with our friends. I made a Simran Mala (the Sikh prayer beads). Roop told us if a Sikh passed their driving test or some thing else one of the families would make a big meal for everyone at the Gurdwara. Evie Rossi

I liked Sikh day because Roop was funny and we got to wear Sikh clothes and bindis.  We learnt more about Sikhism and the Guru Granth Sahib and the other Gurus.  I learnt that they had to cover their heads at all times.  Eddie Martin

My favourite thing was definitely the dressing up.  Mr. Singh was really funny and Mrs. Singh was so kind.  I found the whole experience amazing.  I found out lots of very interesting things and I went home telling all of my family about things like the 5Ks but I do not think that my older brother Simon was that interested.  Jane Prinsley

I had a great time at Sikh day because I loved doing the workshop with Surinder and Roop.  I thought he was great. I loved it.  I also enjoyed listening to Roop and touching the objects.  I found it amazing that they weren't allowed to cut their hair.  I liked making objects out of paper and the kachera were amazing.  I don’t know how they made them way back in the past.  Tom de Vrijer

Thank you to Roop and Surinder for coming to visit us again.  We look forward to welcoming them back to School next year.  More information about the RS Department and what it does, including last year’s review of Sikh Day, can be found out on the RS page of the School Website.
