Maths

Mathematics is taught at Town Close House School with the aim of allowing all children to become confident in their ability and to develop an appreciation of mathematics in everyday life. Our children enjoy the challenges of mathematics and learn how to apply their knowledge in problem solving situations.

Mr Sowry, who is supported by twelve other members of staff, leads the department. From Year 2 onwards mathematics is taught in sets. We have an extra maths set when compared to form classes and this allows us to keep class sizes very small, especially with the lower ability groups.

Our Whole School Curriculum is in line with the Numeracy Strategy, although the top sets are stretched with work from the year ahead. In Years 7 and 8 we concentrate on the Common Entrance syllabus, linking this with the Key Stage 3 Strategy for Mathematics from the Department for Education and Skills. Those showing the necessary potential are prepared for Scholarships as part of a specialist group.

We are lucky that Town Close is blessed with superb ICT facilities and the Mathematics Department makes full use of this. We have regular slots booked in the computer suite so the children can explore the many mathematics programs we use. Additional resources have been bought to aid the teaching of the subject on our interactive white boards.

In the Summer Term the Mathematics and Science departments host a Maths and Science Week where outside companies come and deliver workshops while our own staff organise activities around the school site.

We also host a bi-annual Mathematics Workshop for parents to keep them up to date with current thinking and teaching methods.
