Year 8 Geography Field Trip

On Monday 5th September Year 8 set out for Holt Hall on a three day geography field trip. After settling in they were taken to Overstrand to study the coastal erosion and sea defences. They looked at the different ways the area was protected, the cost and what effect these protective measures had on the stretches of coastline either side.

That evening the children got to know the grounds of the Hall much better by completing an orienteering course. Some saw the exercise as a competition and raced round while others took the chance to admire the beautiful surroundings.

The programme for Tuesday involved a full days’ study of the River Glaven from the source near Bodham to the mouth at Blakeney Point. The pupils visited various points along the route and were able to see how the river changed throughout its course.  They also waded in the river to measure the width, depth, velocity, load size, bankfull width and depth. They looked at what was natural and what was man’s influence on the river. They ended up at Moreston Quey where a well earned ice cream was enjoyed. That evening they looked at the information collected and discussed what they had found.

On the last morning, after packing ready to return to school, the pupils went off to study longshore drift at Weyborne and Cley. They measured the beach profile, wind speed, wave speed, observed the wave direction and measured the long axis of a random selection of pebbles. Despite the waves coming in at a different angle than expected, due to the unusual wind direction, they were able to show that the drift was towards Blakeney.

Despite all the hard work everyone did have time to relax by playing various games, with pool being the most popular. All the boys and girls said they enjoyed the trip and thought it was good fun.
