Art

Pupils are encouraged to show an interest in the visual arts and to enjoy creating work in two and three-dimensions.

They are encouraged to use their imagination and think for themselves as well as working directly from observation.

They are taught how to understand and interpret the work of artists, both contemporary and from different times and cultures, to enable them to make informed judgements and develop their own work.

They are encouraged to find information for themselves from books, the Internet and by practical experimentation.

Pupils are taught how to use and combine the various elements of Art.  They learn by focused practical tasks and by more open-ended topics.

They are taught how to use tools and materials safely, imaginatively and appropriately for the expression of their ideas.

Design Technology

Throughout the school pupils are encouraged to take an interest in creating objects for particular purposes.

It is expected that the children will use their imagination and think for themselves, suggesting ways in which things can be done.

They are encouraged to find out information to themselves, from books, computer sources and particularly by experimentation.

They are shown how  to express ideas verbally, on paper and in model form.

Pupils are taught how to use tools safely and for their correct purposes.

They are taught an understanding of the working characteristics of a variety of materials and are encouraged to combine them in appropriate ways.

Their work is evaluated as it progresses and formal evaluations are often done at the end of projects.

Projects are provided which enable slower pupils to achieve the learning objectives whilst the more able pupils continue to be challenged.  An emphasis is placed on hands-on learning.
