At the beginning of the spring term a sculpture appeared at the top of the school drive and we took a walk to look at the seated figure of a man sculptured from snow! On our return to the Nursery we found a photograph of a sculpture called ‘The Thinker’ by Rodin on the computer which looked remarkably similar. We used clay to model our own sculptures and enjoyed exploring ice and snow in a texture tray outside.
The following week we met Kevin, the snow sculptor and asked him questions about his sculpture. By this time ‘The Thinker’ had begun to thaw which prompted Harry to suggest that if it had been made from wood it wouldn’t have melted!
As a result of our interest in sculpture, we arranged a visit to The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. We took clipboards and cameras to record what we saw and had fun exploring the sculptures outside. Back in the Nursery we were again inspired to model with clay using ideas from some of the exhibits we had seen.
Nursery Wedding Celebration at Caistor St Edmund Church
In March the Nursery visited Caistor St Edmund church to give everyone a taste of what two children were soon to experience as attendants at wedding ceremonies. Rev Rosie Bunn kindly agreed to officiate at a mock wedding service and we were grateful to organist Gillian Martin for playing appropriate music. We wrote invitations and dressed up in wedding outfits including top hats we made for the occasion. Parents were invited to come and join in our celebration.
After the church wedding ceremony was over we took a breezy walk around the buried Roman town. We negotiated stiles and kissing gates as well as glimpsing some new born lambs leaping in the fields.
On our return to school a magnificent wedding breakfast had been prepared for us. We feasted on cocktail rolls, crudités and strawberry jelly washed down with lashings of ‘apple juice champagne’. After the ‘thank you’ speeches we tucked into delicious wedding buns.
Samaritans Purse Shoe Boxes
The Reception and Nursery children have been collecting items to fill shoe boxes for the ‘Samaritans Purse’ Christmas Appeal. They wrapped up the boxes in colourful Christmas paper and filled them with the items they had brought in to School. On Tuesday 3rd November Rev Rosie Bunn came in to School to meet the children and collect the boxes, which will be sent to children in other countries who would not otherwise receive any presents at Christmas.
Nursery visit to Notcutts
On Wednesday 30th September, the Nursery children eagerly boarded the school minibuses for a short journey to Notcutts Garden Centre. On arrival we were greeted by parents, helpers and Mr Reynolds from Notcutts.
Farm Shop
The Farm Shop in the Nursery has been very popular and the ‘kitchen’ has been a hive of industry. We learnt how to use kitchen tools safely when we made coleslaw, vegetable soup, apple crumble, cheese and potato pie and apple juice. The children also had fun vegetable printing and repeating sequence patterns. We also enjoyed a visit to the HFG Farm Shop where we bought some vegetables.
Big Ears
The Nursery children have been wearing ‘big ears’ on our listening walks in the School grounds. Can you guess some of the sounds we heard?
Outside Learning
The activities in our outside learning area have involved lots of child initiated learning. The children have made pathways, planted bulbs and made dens.
